In the late 1880's Jim Tanner leaves Pittsburgh with his wife, Kate, and their two children, Virgil and Andrew, to take over a a farm in Wyoming owned by their cousin Pete.  They quickly discover that the farm is run down and has been inhabited by a mountain man, Thompson, and his Shoshone Indian friend Two Dogs.  The family learns that all the water for the land comes from a stream that crosses the land of Ab Cross and despite what their land deed says, Cross will cut off their water supply.

Undaunted, the family begins repairing the farm and making the home livable.  They have their first encounter with Ab Cross and find that he's more than unreasonable.  Turning to the law, Tanner contacts a marshal in Cheyenne about the water problem.  While getting supplies in town Tanner is confronted by Cross and a fight erupts in which Tanner emerges victorious.  The infuriated Cross demands that the Tanner's water supply be cut off.

Virgil strikes out on his own to try and open the damn and let water out to their farm and Tanner discovers his sons plans and tries to stop him but not before they are spotted and he is shot in the leg.  With his father wounded, Virgil must assume the responsibilities of running the farm and just when it looks as though the family is slowly getting on their feet a cyclone strikes and leaves the farm in shambles.

Kate has had enough and pleads to return to Pittsburgh but Jim Tanner and his sons are determined to make the farm work.  The marshall arrives and demands that Cross open the dam to allow the Tanner's their legal water flow.  Cross, does as ordered but that night, in a drunken fury, he rides to the Tanner farm and sets fire to their barn.  Jim Tanner tries to stop him and once again is shot by Cross.  With his wife pleading for their lives, Cross takes careful aim but is instead shot by Virgil.

The following morning, Cross's men come to the farm to get the body of Ab Cross and promise that the land feud will stop and that they will return the next morning to rebuild their barn.  For now the Tanners are free to start their new life.

This excellent Disney family film is filled with adventure and excitement, making it a fine film for everyone.  While the color has slightly faded on this 16mm print, there is still plenty of there to show the natural beauty of the Grand Tetons and the Wyoming wilderness.
