George Romero's classic tale of terror is a proud addition to our little theater. This black and white feature from 1968 has gained a much deserved cult status among horror fans. Two sequels and a remake have followed since then. It tells the story of a town outside of Pittsburgh who falls under siege by the ghoulish flesh eating living dead. Seven strangers find themselves together in an abandoned farmhouse where they must struggle to keep the zombies from destroying them. Everything they need to survive is at their hands, but personal prejudices and petty differences get in their way and they soon find themselves spending as much time fighting among themselves as they do trying to stop the zombie invasion.
This low budget thriller was shot in and around the Pittsburgh area and still manages to make the audiences flesh crawl with sheer terror. From the moment Russ Streiner (Johnny) utters the immortal phrase "They're coming to get you Barbara!" the movie becomes an uncomfortable journey into the deep dark recesses of our most hellish nightmares. Each scene draws us further and further into that nightmare with unrelenting horror as our mind struggles to accept the terror and reality of what is being unleashed before us. The movie never lets up, even to it's shocking conclusion and the lights finally go up bringing us back into the reality of the real world where something like this could never happen....or could it?!!!!!

On a trip to the Monster Bash, we took a side trip to visit the Evans City Cemetery and see where the opening sequence with Barbara and Johnny were shot. After some digging around (not literally), we found some of the tombstones used in the film. As you enter the cemetery, the grounds keeping shed, which is featured so predominantly in the background is easy to spot on your left but the other markers were much more difficult to find. There was a terrible storm that uprooted much of the cemetery after the film was made so it looks different than the film but the sections where much of the films opening sequence was made is still identifiable. We took some pictures and have included them on this site. There's also a few pictures we took when we met some of the cast. Hope you enjoy them!
